Goals Cosmoqueen Foundation: apolitical non-profit organisation to combat poverty

CosmoQueen generates well-paid work for women who are living in poverty, regardless of their nationality or religion. These work-generating projects help women in developing countries by both raising their standard of living, and by giving considerable impetus to their economic and social independence.

CosmoQueen considers it vital to help underprivileged women combat poverty, and it has been proven that the most effective way to overcome poverty is to generate work for women. A woman is often the central figure in her family - and can, therefore, become a driving force in society.

By helping women become a part of the employment system, it is anticipated that women will begin to become more involved in public life. And that can result in a levelling of the balance of power between men and women in administrative and political decision-making processes. And such female input could have an enormously beneficial effect on the course of the peace process. CosmoQueen sees this as being one of the most positive and inspiring side-effects of its work.

Through its work, CosmoQueen is contributing to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals: Goal 1) eradicate extreme hunger and poverty; Goal 3) promote gender equality and empower women; and Goal 8) develop a global partnership for development. Fair Trade.

To realise its goals, CosmoQueen produces and sells exclusive and exquisite, hand-made fashion and interior accessories of unquestionable high-quality. These include shawls and plaids and very soon also bags and cushions. The products are designed by CosmoQueen, and are finely and skilfully produced in limited editions by the women involved in the projects in Jordan and Cambodia: the women work either in their own homes or in a workshop. The workshops are established by different local foundations (NGOs). The raw material, shantung silk, is delicately woven by landmine victims in Cambodia.

Local handicrafts

The traditional skills of the women involved in the project are always used as the starting point for the design of these exquisite shawls. The CosmoQueen designs are exclusively produced with pure natural materials that are available in the countries involved: such as the luxurious and sensuous shantung silk from Cambodia; the softest, finest hand-woven camel wool and plush, opulent cotton velvet from Jordan.

Being able to work using their local, traditional techniques that have been handed-down for generations, gives the women an enormous sense of confidence in their own abilities. They discover that they are well able to generate their own income, by using traditional skills that they learned from a very young age.

Educated and trained women manage the production process on site, and guarantee the required high quality.

The CosmoQueen label has proved to be a leader in the fashion industry. A sumptuous, contemporary collection of exceptional high quality is designed annually.
The collection is sold in the top segment of the retail market (see sales points). In addition, CosmoQueen organises a range of events (see agenda) at which it is possible to admire and purchase products from the latest luxurious shawl collections. Every euro of profit that is made is put back into CQ’s activities: to improve the projects; expand the number of workshops; set up educational programmes; and utilise more modern working materials
